Health Level Seven Forms HL7 Taiwan Affiliate
Ann Arbor, Mich July 17, 2000 Health Level Seven, Inc. (HL7) has announced the formation of a new international affiliate—HL7 Taiwan. HL7 Taiwan joins already established HL7 affiliates in Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, India, Japan, New Zealand, Southern Africa, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, and newly formed affiliates in China and Korea.
The affiliate in each country is a not-for-profit entity organized along principles that mirror those of HL7. As affiliates, they receive the right to use the HL7 name, to distribute the standard in their country, to produce translations and implementation guides for their users and participate in technical committees.
Yu-Chuan Li, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Graduate Institute of Medical Informatics at Taipie Medical College, is the chairman of HL7 Taiwan’s board of directors. Li says the group decided to become a part of HL7 in order to ensure that Taiwan continues toward the development of a single, nationally accepted standard.
"The goal of HL7 Taiwan is to actively disseminate the HL7 Standard into Taiwan’s academia, government, and healthcare and information technology industries by providing seminars, training courses, a website and other activities," said Li. "Through participating in the HL7 International Committee, we also hope to share experiences with other nations who have accomplished this task."
The group hopes that by participating in the HL7 standards development process, they will also be able to ensure that HL7 standards will accommodate Chinese double-byte character sets and will, therefore, be easily used in the computing environments of Chinese-speaking countries like Taiwan.
Stan Huff, chairman of HL7’s board of directors, is excited about the addition of HL7 Taiwan. "Having Taiwan join the HL7 international community is very important," said Huff. "Having representation from locations such as Taiwan will help ensure that the standards are robust, meet the needs of an international healthcare IT community and will help provide interoperability on a global level."
Founded in 1987, Health Level Seven, Inc. (http://www.HL7.org) is a not-for-profit, ANSI-Accredited Standards Developing Organization that provides standards for the exchange, management and integration of data that supports clinical patient care and the management, delivery and evaluation of healthcare services. HL7 international affiliates are active in Australia, Canada, China, Finland, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Southern Africa, Taiwan and the United Kingdom. HL7’s endeavors are sponsored, in part, by the support of its benefactors: Agilent Technologies, CAP Gemini Ernst & Young U.S. LLC, IBM Global Healthcare Industry, IDX Systems Corporation, IMRglobal, Johnson & Johnson, McKessonHBOC, Quest Diagnostics Inc., Shared Medical Systems (SMS) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
