BUYERS GUIDE: Practice Management

By Patty Enrado, Contributing Editor 04/01/06 BUYERS 0406

EMR drives practice management
hysician groups are replacing their legacy systems, which marks a big opportunity for vendors in this market, according to Brooke Turner, research manager for KLAS. The most desirable system is a single-system, single-database, Windows-based solution.

hysicians also want a strong customizable reporter writer to manipulate data easily in order to see financial trends. As large clinics are closely associated with hospitals, these physician groups are heavily influenced by the systems the hospitals use, said Jared Peterson, director of field operations for KLAS. Therefore, EMR systems are driving practice management systems overall. The following list is based on The Top 20: 2005 Best in KLAS report. Healthcare IT News will cover ambulatory EMR systems in the June Buyers Guide.
Do you offer a single-database solution? Groupcast can help customers manage centralized/decentralized processing with three different options: Separate databases with independent constant table files that can be copied and updated but are separate files; one database with shared constant table files but multiple patient registrations, using different account number ranges for each practice; or one database with shared constant table files and one shared patient registration and account number.

Does your system have a customizable reporter writer or does it require a third-party reporter writer? Groupcast offers standard operational and custom reports as part of the core solution. The Custom Report Writer offers thousands of elements at all levels of the database. Groupcast can store hundreds of customer-specific custom reports to be run on demand. In addition, these reports can have “run-time” elements that will prompt the user to enter specific data each time the report is run. Additional reports can also be stored on a storage medium. Groupcast offers hundreds of standard reports with thousands of search-and-sort options, accommodating nearly every routine report and most specialty reports, as well as relational reporting, in addition to the custom reporting described above. Integration with other Groupcast solutions means reports are based on complete and current data in your transactional systems, so informed decisions can be made with confidence.
