Those products are:
• MEDENT by Community Computer Service, Inc. and
• Medical Practice Management Client/Server by LSS Data Systems

“This is the center of the universe on health IT today,” said HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt, in his remarks after the announcement. “This is a profoundly important day.”

“This is important to the president,” he said, adding that interoperability was key and CCHIT would continue its work along the path toward interoperability. "This seal of approval removes a significant barrier to widespread adoption of electronic health records," he said. "It gives healthcare providers peace of mind to know they are purchasing a product that is functional, interoperable and will bring higher quality, safe care to patients."

The CCHIT Certified seal – a “seal of approval”– provides the first real benchmark for ambulatory EHR products, said Mark Leavitt. One of the stated purposes of the commission is to encourage the adoption of healthcare information technology by physicians. Industry leaders often cite cost and uncertainty about which products to choose as barriers to technology uptake.

With this first round of certification, the commission encourages physicians to look for EHR products featuring the CCHIT Certified seal, Mark Leavitt said. They can feel confident in purchasing CCHIT Certified products because the certification criteria have been designed to ensure that products provide a defined set of functions, are compatible with other systems, and are secure and reliable.

CCHIT is preparing materials for vendors that will assist them with promoting their certified products to physicians. The materials will include guidelines for product advertising and public relations.

At least two dozen vendors applied for certification of ambulatory EHRs by the commission, which won a federal contract to test and certify electronic medical record systems and the networks that connect them.

Some members of the commission have complained that the $28,000 they must pay for certification is too high and could drive small electronic health records vendors out of business.
