Hi 张琨 and any other friend,

I am new here. Thanks for all your posts that paint me a picture about this field. 张琨, I read your personal experiences and am impressed by it.  Currently I am enthusiastic about the healthcare informatics, healthcare service and management, and really want to join this field. So, I am asking you for a piece of advice about it based on your diverse background.

First of all, say a little about myself. I got Bachelor in genetics and Master in knowledge engineering. After working couple of years as a programmer, I am studying bioinformatics towards Ph.D. in United States now. However, I am more and more interested in clinically oriented stuff and really want to pursue a career towards improving healthcare service in china. Since I do not have any medical training, I am not sure whether I can transit into this field or not?  And after getting my degree, I really want to come back to china and work in this field (healthcare informatics or management). How can I knock and then open this door?

如果分析得不错，2楼的庙，在国内应该属于屈指可数的几座大庙了吧。
为什么要转呢？genetics and knowledge engineering，bioinformatics，挺不错的专业和经历。
但是你想去公司还是医院？

从你的陈述，其实你已经做了决定，就是走向医学信息学在医院管理领域应用。这是一个新兴的领域，路很长，草叶多，需要更多人的来踩一踩。当然一定要耐得住寂寞和诱惑。
作这行没什么锦囊妙计。慢慢来，多注意你感兴趣的研究动向，注意基础理论和行业实际经验的积累，时间久了就会找到乐趣。

jhs1, I think that the bioinformatics and medical(healthcare) informatics will converge into each other in the future from the pure research point of view. Personally I want to do something that is more close to the practical end and can quickly deliver benefit to the society. Maybe based on my background, I am more suitable for a company environment, but I think that the core of this field is hospital or the way that run hospital, isn’t it?
BTW,  what exactly are those “国内屈指可数的几座大庙 “? Do you mind enumerating them? Thanks.

我们正准备踩一些草呢，也不辜负老包的期望，医院也能做出一些事情来。
庙是不算小，但是待遇还是没法向广东比。如果要一个发挥的平台，请放心，没问题。如果要两全，敝人不敢保证。

新生学科的变化是很大的，也很快。新生学科往往也是桥梁学科，发展的的路线往往殊途同归。或者说分久必合，合久必分。
至于与医学有关的学科，第一线还是在和病人打交道的医院。
但是具体到个人，做什么专业，在医院第一线还是在公司的高层，或者是在后台，就要看个人的爱好和兴趣，也要看条件。
医院能够提供的条件，协和医院招聘信息科主任，可以参考。
“国内屈指可数的大庙”是针对2楼说的，仅限于医院。具体应该是大家心目中的“三级特等医院”了，虽然是没有评审，但是大家心中还是有比较一致的看法。
当然医院大，未必信息化工作先进。

唉，个人以为，其实biomedical informtics比medical informatics的科研领域新，热门多一些，一个是技术阶段的研发，一个是应用领域的探索。两者在未来应该是逐渐整合的。国内只是“科技”中偏技术，而轻视基础学科的研究，在这方面投入不够。

<br>个人建议：不要单纯的去HIS公司或者一般的医院做应用，而是进行科研转型，下一个课题的时候，开始把技术向应用方面结合，逐渐产品化，当整合到应用的层面时，你自然就会落到一个比较实在的环境和位置上。现在仓促的扭转方向，可能。。。当然，个人观点，尽供拍砖。

right, it makes lots of sense to me. i totally agree on your opinion about the difference between bio and medical informatics. now more and more key person in the field talk about the personal medicine. in that picture, bioinformatics really get into the practical healthcare process. but the real progress is still slow. i personally want to involved to the practical end. it is why i am thinking that maybe medical informatics is more suitable for me.
