The Institute for Advanced Study is one of the world’s leading centers for theoretical research and intellectual inquiry. The Institute exists to encourage and support fundamental scholarship -- the original, often speculative, thinking that produces advances in knowledge. It provides for the mentoring of younger scholars by Faculty, and offers the freedom to pursue work that will make significant contributions to a broad range of fields in the sciences and humanities.Work at the Institute takes place in four Schools: <a href="http://www.hs.ias.edu/" target="_blank">Historical Studies</a>, <a href="http://www.math.ias.edu/" target="_blank">Mathematics</a>, <a href="http://www.sns.ias.edu/" target="_blank">Natural Sciences</a>, and <a href="http://www.sss.ias.edu/" target="_blank">Social Science</a>. Esteemed past Faculty have included <a href="http://www.ias.edu/SpFeatures/einstein/ae-p1.php" target="_blank">Albert Einstein</a>, who remained at the Institute until his death in 1955, and luminaries such as Kurt Gödel, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Erwin Panofsky, Homer A. Thompson, John von Neumann, George Kennan and Hermann Weyl. Currently, a permanent <a href="http://www.ias.edu/About/faculty.php" target="_blank">Faculty</a> of twenty-six eminent scholars guides the work of the Schools, and each year awards fellowships to some 190 visiting Members, from about one hundred universities and research institutions through out the world.The Institute for Advanced Study is dedicated to the disinterested pursuit of knowledge which, in many cases, has led to major advances and discoveries. The work of the Institute’s Faculty and Members has had an indelible impact intellectually and practically since the inception of the Institute seventy-five years ago. At the beginning of computing, one of the first stored program computers was designed and built on the Institute’s campus, and research from that project influenced the development of today’s computers (von Neumann architecture) and formed the mathematical basis for computer software. The foundations of game theory, a powerful tool in economics, were formed in the School of Mathematics at the Institute, as was fundamental research leading to modern mathematical meteorology. Research in the School of Natural Sciences has greatly advanced string theory and astrophysics. Research in the School of Social Science has had wide-reaching impact on the field of global development. Texts by Institute Faculty in the School of Historical Studies have become key references for generations of art historians and led to the creation of art history as a discipline in the United States.In addition to the main work taking place in the four Schools, there are also several special programs: the<a href="http://www.admin.ias.edu/ma/" target="_blank"> Institute for Advanced Study/Park City Mathematics Institute</a> is an innovative program that integrates mathematics educators, researchers and students; the <a href="http://www.ids.ias.edu/" target="_blank">

The Institute also has an <a href="http://www.admin.ias.edu/air/" target="_blank">Artist-in-Residence</a> program that provides an annual series of concerts and lectures for the Institute and broader community.The Institute is a private, independent academic institution located in Princeton, New Jersey. It was founded in 1930 by philanthropists Louis Bamberger and his sister Caroline Bamberger Fuld, and through the vision of educator Abraham Flexner and the guidance of founding Trustees Samuel D. Leidesdorf and Herbert H. Maass. Dr. Peter Goddard is the current Director of the Institute The Institute’s more than 5,000 former Members hold positions of intellectual and scientific leadership in the United States and abroad. Some twenty-one Nobel laureates, and thirty-two out offorty-four Fields Medalists, have been Institute Faculty or Members. Many winners of the Wolf or MacArthur prizes have also been affiliated with the Institute.The Institute has no formal links to other educational institutions. However, since its founding, it has enjoyed close, collaborative ties with Princeton University, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and other nearby institutions. 世界上就怕"认真"和"严谨"二词,普林斯顿和诺贝尔事业是学者的榜样.

在我看来,我们的关键问题不在于能否获得几项诺贝尔奖,而在于能否学到这种"认真"精神.如果我们的环境变得非常认真,聪明而勤奋的中华儿女难道不能为人类科学作出一个又一个重大贡献吗?

普林斯顿是一个人口不足三万的小镇，但她之所以在美国家喻户晓，在世界上颇有名气，主要还是因为这里有普林斯顿大学和普林斯顿高等研究院。普林斯顿大学是一所小型学校，学生包括研究生在内只有六千多。但这所创立于1746年的常青藤学校，向来标榜重质不重量。每次全美学系评比，普林斯顿大学的数学系都是名列榜首。物理系在全美常踞第三第四，却先后有过十多位诺贝尔奖获得者。社会科学人文科学方面的根基也许更深一些。首创“三权分立，互相制衡”的政治制度的美国第四任总统麦迪逊，就是普林斯顿大学毕业生。反对孤立主义、主张抑制法西斯的美国第28任总统威尔逊，也是普林斯顿大学的毕业生，他曾担任普林斯顿大学校长八年。据说，在目前白宫工作班子里，普林斯顿大学很有影响力。普林斯顿高等研究院的历史就比大学短得多。研究院分物理部、数学部、历史部等。各部只设极少数终身教授，绝大部分成员则是来自世界各地的教授，到这里访问研究，长则一年，短则数月，从制度上保持活力，开学术交流风气之先。中国数学家丘成桐，是第一位受聘为普林斯顿高等研究院终身教授的华人学者。杨振宁教授，曾经在高等研究院度过十几年学术生涯的黄金岁月。普林斯顿高等研究院和普林斯顿大学在行政上各自独立，但学术上过往其密。大学的研究生更是高等研究院学术讲座的常客。<a href="http://www.wsjk.com.cn/gb/paper20/55/class002000001/hwz231194.htm" target="_blank">http://www.wsjk.com.cn/gb/paper20/55/class002000001/hwz231194.htm...1/hwz231194.htm</a> <div>此帖由老包在 2006-04-21 11:36 进行编辑...</div>

通过如下理念实现<医学信息学论坛>的金色品牌:(1)提倡严谨的科学探索精神.深入探讨医学信息学理论,特别是关于生物医学语义的理论.这是一片尚待开发的领域.而信息学家往往10倍,100倍的低估了其复杂性;(2)学习,探索,介绍,教学,实现各种生物医学语义开发技术(包括数据挖掘),为社会服务;(3)与病历数据库合作,与世界收费的或免费的各大知识库数据库合作i,为社会服务;(4)开发体现论坛特色的与国际互补的知识库;(5)建立学术探讨机制,以及有关学术程序.以上为初步设想.
