Specifically, HITSP on June 14 approved 90 standards for use cases to:

• Allow clinicians to electronically access laboratory results;

• Allow consumers to allow designated care givers and other healthcare providers to access patient registration summaries and medication histories; and

• Send ambulatory care and emergency department visit, utilization and lab data to public health agencies within less than a day.

HITSP, which has a federal contract to work with the Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology and the American National Standards Institute, does not create standards. Rather, it makes recommendations based on standards that currently exist.

After the July 4th holiday, HITSP will begin working on guides about how to use the standards. HITSP is supposed to submit the guidance to HHS by the end of September.

“It will be together in a format that implementers can use to get into their products,” said Joyce Sensmeier, a vice president for informatics with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society and staff member of the HITSP.
