In the past years you have contributed to the International Journal of Medical Informatics (IJMI) as an author or a reviewer. We would like to have your opinion on a number of issues that are relevant for the future of IJMI.
There is a trend for almost all journals that institutional subscriptions are decreasing while subscriptions to on-line subscriptions - as part of a larger package - are increasing. During the meeting of the editorial board of IJMI in November 2006, the question was raised whether it would be a good idea to move from the mixed publication strategy (paper and on-line through ScienceDirect) to an on-line only publication.
The on-line only strategy will have no effect on the listing of papers in PUBMED nor will it effect the inclusion of our journal in the citation index. The on-line version of the paper will be a PDF file, with a layout that is identical to the current layout of printed papers, plus a full text html version containing dynamic reference links. It is current practice that each paper has a DOI (digital object identifier) that is unique and is a reference to the paper. Papers that are available on-line at ScienceDirect as "articles in press" already have a DOI that remains the same when the article is printed. It is accepted policy to refer to papers in reference lists by DOI.
It is known that sample copies of journals are a good promotional tool. With the journal being on-line only, we would miss such a promotional tool. We have considered publishing one issue of the journal per year with the "best" papers. The selection criteria needs to be established, but it could include one or two papers as "editor's choice", the most frequently downloaded papers in a period of 6 months after their publication, the mostly cited papers in a period of 12/18 months after their publication, etc.
Please take a few minutes to fill in the form on-line (5 questions only) by 2nd February 2007.
Thank you for your cooperation
