Group Releases First EHR Functional Requirements Standard

February 22, 2007

Health Level Seven on Wednesday released the first standard that identifies functional requirements for electronic health record systems to be approved by the American National Standards Institute, eWeek reports.

The standard details 1,000 conformance criteria for 130 functions, including:

Clinical decision support;
Medication history;
Privacy and security support;
Problem lists; and
Orders.

"The new standard is a 'superset' of functions that enables a standardized description and common understanding of functions, which is necessary when you're working across care settings," Linda Fischetti, EHR Technical Committee co-chair, said.

The standard also should help accommodate additional functions for EHR systems, such as a legal record for business purposes, disaster preparedness, long-term health care, behavioral health, child health and clinical research.

The Certification Commission for Health IT, which also certifies EHR systems, praised HL7 and said the two organizations set a good example of health IT collaborations, eWeek reports (Baker, eWeek, 2/21).
