Teams Named to Define Industry Terms
November 30, 2007 The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has named members of two work groups that will seek consensus on the definitions and use of five common health I.T. terms.
The Records Work Group will cover the terms electronic health record, electronic medical record and personal health record. The Networks Work Group will focus on the terms Regional Health Information Organization and Health Information Exchange.
The national coordinator’s office in the Department of Health and Human Services recently contacted with consulting firm BearingPoint Inc. to manage the project. The National Alliance for Health Information Technology, a subcontractor, handled the workgroup selection process.

The office believes the lack of consensus on industry terms is impeding progress on I.T. adoption and innovation. Work group members held their first meeting on Nov. 30 and will seek public comment during forums in January and February before submitting a final report by March 28. Comments also will be accepted during this period at definitions.nahit.org.
