HITSP OKs Interoperability Specs
December 19, 2007 The Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel has recommended a second set of “interoperability specifications” to facilitate health data exchange.
The new interoperability specifications cover consumer access to clinical information, quality of care and electronic health records for emergency responders.
HITSP is an industry group working under a federal government contract to “harmonize” data standards--getting them to work together to promote interoperability. The group previously recommended three interoperability specifications, comprising more than 30 standards and covering biosurveillance, electronic health records and consumer empowerment interoperability needs. Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt officially accepted the specifications--which federal agencies must use when implementing or upgrading information systems--in January 2007. |
